Additional Tuition Assistance Options

VETERANS BENEFITS

Some students qualify for federal and state grants, which provide free financial assistance that doesn’t need to be repaid. Programs like the Pell Grant and Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) are awarded based on financial need, helping to lower tuition costs and ease the burden of paying for college. Completing the FAFSA is the first step to determining your eligibility for these valuable resources. Grants are only applicable to undergraduate students pursuing a first bachelor’s degree.

EMPLOYER REIMBURSEMENT

Many employers offer tuition reimbursement to help employees further their education at reduced costs. If you're currently employed, check with your HR department to see if this benefit is available to you.

Since employers typically require proof of satisfactory course completion before reimbursing tuition, the Employer Deferred Payment Plan (EDpay) allows for payment deferral up to 40 days after the semester ends, with no interest during the deferment period. Documentation is required at the time of registration each semester.

GRANTS

Some students qualify for federal and state grants, which provide free financial assistance that doesn’t need to be repaid. Programs like the Pell Grant and Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) are awarded based on financial need, helping to lower tuition costs and ease the burden of paying for college. Completing the FAFSA is the first step to determining your eligibility for these valuable resources. Grants are only applicable to undergraduate students pursuing a first bachelor’s degree.

STUDENT LOANS

Student loans help bridge the gap between financial aid and college costs, allowing you to invest in your education now and repay over time. Federal student loans typically offer lower interest rates and flexible repayment options, while private loans can supplement funding if needed. It’s important to borrow wisely and understand the terms to make informed financial decisions for your future.

FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS

The Federal Direct Loan has a fixed interest rate. No repayment of principal is required while the student is enrolled at least half-time (6+ credit hours). This loan program has a need-based component (subsidized) and a non-need-based component (unsubsidized). Subsidized loans do not accrue interest while you’re in school, while unsubsidized loans start accruing interest immediately.

The amount you can borrow is based on your grade level, dependency status and cost of attendance.

PRIVATE STUDENT LOANS

Private Education Loan programs are designed to bridge the funding gap when savings, grants, student loans, and other resources are not enough. These programs allow families to borrow up to the cost of education minus financial aid and are deferrable while the student is enrolled at least half-time, although interest may accrue during this period. These loans also offer flexible repayment terms.

Most Private Education Loans require the student to pass a credit check, and in some cases, a credit-worthy cosigner may be required.

Applying for Financial Aid

Paying for college can feel like a challenge, but financial aid makes it more manageable. Applying for aid opens the door to grants and low-interest loans that can significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses. Whether you need full assistance or just a little help, exploring your options ensures you’re making the most of available resources. Investing in your education is a big step, and financial aid can help make it an affordable reality.

Completing the FAFSA

Completing the FAFSA is the first step to determining your eligibility for these valuable resources and it may be easier to apply than you think! Apply for a Federal Student Aid Identification Number (FSA ID; for dependent students, the contributing parent will also need an FSA ID).
